The former Macedon State Nursery Hotel is not only situated in one of Victoria’s highly sought after regions, but also regarded as an architecturally, historically and socially important historic building. Today the two storey solid brick building stands as a “blank canvas”, ready for a visionary renovator to revive the once majestic hotel building as a country family house or convert the building into a café, art studio/gallery, distillery or an accommodation destination. Similarly, the old bakehouse can also be revived as an artisan bakery. The possibilities are endless and only limited by your imagination (STCA).
Built in c.1869 by James Nicholls and Eliza Weedon in the Mid Victorian vernacular, the hotel was built with bricks from the nearby Nicholls Brickworks, and initially known as the Bricklayers Arms. In 1881 it was renamed the Macedon State Nursery Hotel due to the neighbouring State Nursery. The hotel became a highly successful hotel and guesthouse, despite living there with their 10 children. Sadly, the last drinks were poured in 1926, when the hotel lost its license, as Victoria embarked on reducing the number of regional liquor licenses. After its closure, it became a private residence and today it remains one of the few surviving historic buildings from Macedon’s early history.
All the rooms retain internal architectural features expected of a house of this importance, including timber fire surrounds, floorboards, high ceilings, original timber joinery, panelled doors, French doors and large sash windows. Externally, the symmetrical front façade is of brick construction and has a verandah on all sides. The property includes the original bakehouse and wine cellar, a 2 roomed brick building with car garaging. The property is connected to mains water, power and gas is available.
Located on a 3033m2 allotment, the property includes a swimming pool, tennis court, and established gardens consisting of mature oak trees, Japanese maples, rhododendrons and lawn areas.
The property is located in the Macedon Ranges – a region that is historically, culturally and environmentally important. Within reach are the historic gardens of Mount Macedon, walking and bike trails, historic villages, leading artisan cafes and restaurants, galleries, cool climate vineyards, farmers markets, and within 300 metres walk – the local swimming hole. Environmentally, at 500m above sea level, the area enjoys good rainfall and is known for its cool and purifying air, and four distinct seasons. The local area provides all levels of exceptional schooling, supermarkets, shopping, commercial and medical services, train stations and Melbourne CBD is a short a 50 minute drive and Tullamarine Airport is 35 minutes.

The former historic Macedon State Nursery Hotel is a property offering unlimited scope for a visionary buyer seeking a new and exciting restoration project or direction in life. Not only could you create a beautiful home, but there is the potential to revive this once unique hotel building into a truly remarkable commercial venture.
The possibilities are endless.
